Now the real reason for this entry is actually serious. There aren't many political issues I care about with great passion these days, but one takes the cake.
Most of you reading this probably never thought about what it would be like if your family didn't have legal rights or protection. It's something most people take for granted. What if no matter what, only one of your parents was actually legally your parent? What if your parents couldn't get married? Or what if you wanted to have the option to get married, but were discriminated against? And for what? Your bedroom hobbies?! Because the person you fell in love with is the "wrong" gender?! There isn't a shred of fairness in that and you know it. We all know it. And yet, every day people don't do anything about it.
A marriage equality bill was passed Sept. 7 by the California state Senate with a vote of 22-15. The bill, AB43, was previously approved June 5 in the Assembly with a vote of 42-34. This is the second time in two years that the California Legislature has passed a bill that would provide all couples with equal access to a marriage license. Huzzah! Gov. Schwarzenegger has until Oct. 14 to either sign or veto the bill. He vetoed it last time, but he gets one more chance to make a serious difference.
Here's what you can do to urge the Governator to make the right choice. It doesn't matter how old you are or where you live.
- spread the word (make a youtube video, tell your friends and family, send a mass email, write some forum posts or facebook notes etc.)
- sign the online petition: [link]
- call Arnold's office: (916) 445-2841
(you will be prompted by a recording and will figure out what to do)
A small step for California, a huge step for America.
